VSP Screening of the Healer and Psychiatrist

You are a ‘very supportive person’, someone who has been part or very helpful in the production of the documentary so far and/or will be able to help in realising it’s future potential for education and health improvement.

We would like to invite you to a pre-screening dinner and talanoa with your family and friends at 6pm before the main screening at 7pm to show our gratitude.

After the screening and Q and A there will also be an opportunity for informal talanoa, to share your experience and thoughts about the film. This will be very important to plan the film’s future use and value.

The film is the result of 20 years of collaboration and support in Tonga and New Zealand.

Summary

In the South Pacific Island group of Vava’u, the traditional healer Emeline Lolohea treats people affected by spirits. One day away by ferry, the only Tongan Psychiatrist Dr Mapa Puloka has established a public psychiatry well known across the region. Though they have never met in person, this film creates a dialogue between them on the nature of mental illness and spiritual affliction. Their transformative communication and deep commitment offers inspiration to improve health.
