Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.
This course, new for 2019, starts on 30 July. Classes run on six Tuesdays 6:30 - 8:30 PM.
Tutor: Ania Grant
Jane Austen is one of the best known and best loved English writers. In this course we try to understand her literary achievement and her enduring popularity. We analyse her literary techniques and her moral vision.
We trace critical responses to her work, from early reviews and reactions of other famous writers, to the feminist ambivalence and the Austen-mania of the last few decades. Most importantly, we discuss each of her novels (and a few screen adaptions), enjoying her vivid characters, her clever humour, her uplifting love stories, and her deep understanding of human nature.
Expected learning outcomes:
- Understanding of individual novels by Jane Austen
- Understanding of Austen's literary techniques and innovations
- Understanding of novel as a literary form
- Understanding of key critical traditions
- Developing skills of textual analysis and critical thinking
Who should attend? Anyone who enjoys Austen's novels and would like to know more about the author and her work.
Our mission is to provide quality affordable and accessible lifelong learning opportunities for our community.
