Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts is pleased once again to present the work of Palmerston North artist Paul Lyons. The Mountains and the Sea: New Paintings by Paul Lyons will premier with an opening reception for the artist on Friday 22nd March from 5-7pm.

This current exhibition is the third solo show at Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts by this self-taught artist who specialises in watercolour. The artist states: “I love the effects that can be achieved in a watery medium – the way colours mix and blend produce results that no other medium can reproduce.”

Lyons’s paintings are always representational, sometimes highly realistic and occasionally the works may be slightly abstract. The theme of this exhibition is given away by its title: The Mountains and the Sea. Paul Lyons never tires of the variety and subtlety of the light effects that occur in these natural environments.

Lyons was born in England, raised in Auckland and lives in Palmerston North where he was employed by Massey University. Paul is well-known in the community as an academic, actor and musician and highly sought after artist.

He has degrees in chemistry and lectured in computer science at Massey for over thirty years. Although Paul has painted for over twenty years, he has only occasionally shown works on the gallery circuit, selling many works privately. In 2017, Lyons was the Guest Artist at the 10th Anniversary of the Feilding and District Art Expo held at the Palmerston North Convention Centre.

All the works in this exhibition use archival-standard materials including cotton rag paper, pigments with a permanence rating of A or better and acid-free mounting mats.

A special feature of this exhibition is the opportunity to win one of Paul Lyons’s paintings. The artist will present an original work to a person who has filled out a form with their name, address and e-mail contact and leaves it at the exhibition. When the exhibition has closed, a name will be drawn from those who have submitted the completed form. The winner will be contacted by Paul Lyons to receive their prize.
