“I scorn to prostitute myself to a man, I that can prostitute a man to me”

Auckland’s smash-hit sensation Pop-up Globe launches their first ever Winter Festival in their unique Shakespearean Playhouse.

Sometimes the past speaks to the present with an urgency and freshness that can’t be matched. Shakespeare’s collaborator Thomas Middleton’s remarkable comedy The Roaring Girl is a parable for our time: the story of a bold and clever woman who transcends gender and explodes prejudice to become the talk of the age. Mary Frith really was the talk of London in 1610. Known as ‘Moll Cutpurse’, she defied conventional contemporary expectations of a woman, haunting the taverns of the city, brawling and thumbing her nose at authority. Moll confounds her critics and makes her own choices about who to love and who to fight.

Extraordinarily, it is believed that the real Mary Frith once stepped in to play ‘herself’ during the play’s debut season in 1611.
