A Watery theme for Waiapu Cathedral Choir concert.

Two different musical settings of the words of Psalm 107 “They that go down to the Sea in Ships will open and close the choir’s 2019 concert on Sunday September 1st. Both arrangements cleverly reflect the meaning of the words of the psalm – the stormy seas, waves, and the safe havens of harbours.

All of the music to be presented in this concert has a theme or reference to water, expressed in many different ways. The first half will focus on music which might be heard in cathedral services; for example Herbert Howells’ beautiful “Like as a Hart” and the hymn “Eternal Father…” and music by Palestrina and Victoria.

In the second half the audience will be treated to songs in a more light-hearted mode - everything from David Wilcocks’ arrangements of familiar English folk songs “Drink to me Only” and “Bobby Shaftoe” to spirituals “Deep River” and Wade in the Water”, a Gilbert and Sullivan song from HMS Pinafore, and Enya’s “Orinoco Flow”.

The choir’s Musical Director, Anthony Tattersall, says “This program is put together to ring the changes for both the audience and the choir, with something that everyone will enjoy.” He has invited the choir of Hukarere Girls College to perform as guest artists and is looking forward to hearing their beautiful harmonies in two waiata.

The Cathedral Strings ensemble will accompany the singers for several songs, and also present excerpts of Handel’s famous “Water Music” and Smetana’s “Die Quelle der Moldau.” And the children in the ranks of the junior choir, recently revived at the cathedral, will join in the performance of Rutter’s anthem “Look at the World” and his lovely arrangement of “All Things Bright and Beautiful”. Members of the choir will also feature as soloists, trios and quartets in pieces which include a Mozart aria and even a little bit of barbershop!

This is the only concert the Waiapu Cathedral Choir will present this year. With special Easter services, visits to Wairoa in July and Waipukurau in August, a Messiah Sing-in event in October and preparation for the traditional Christmas season services about to get underway, 2019 is a very busy year for the choir.

The concert is at 2:30 pm on Sunday September 1st in the Waiapu Cathedral on Browning Street, Napier. Entry is $25 (concession $20, Students $15, children under 12 free) with door sales opening at 2pm.
