Jazz Duo Piano Concert.

The August concert of the monthly Globe Sunday Matinee series which featured two performers at two pianos excited such interest that the venue was almost filled. On September 22 the two pianos will again come together but in this case with two different pianists and a different flavour of programme. There is every reason for patrons to be just as excited.

Chris Dann is very well known to Manawatu jazz audiences as a versatile and entertaining pianist of national standing who is prepared to cross the boundaries of musical styles. He has appeared a number of times in the Te Manawa and Globe series with different performers including the Trio Bella ensemble, and on this occasion he returns in a programme highlighting his own individual pianistic talent.

Chris was introduced to jazz music through attending a workshop by the Jamey Aebersold clinic which came to New Zealand in 1979. He studied classical music with Bruce Greenfield at the Wellington Polytechnic in the 1980's. When attending the Wellington Polytechnic music course in 1981 he was introduced to playing with a big-band with Bud Jones. Chris enjoys working with different styles of music and the associated varying groups.

In this concert Chris will be joined by fellow pianist Nick Van Dyke. Nick plays regularly with bands locally – he has worked with Alan Broadbent, Steve Lacy, Mike Nock, Howard Morrison and Kiri Te Kanawa, and has been a musician and educator for 2 decades.

Chris describes the programme as a 50/50 mix of classical tunes and jazz tunes – mostly well known – or at least easily knowable. He and Nick pick up the tunes as they are and take them on a bit of a journey. Chris describes the challenge of a duo concert which is essentially improvised as ‘a good exercise in concentrated listening.’ Convenor and classical pianist Guy Donaldson has observed that for him the fact that the two performers will be stepping onto the stage not knowing how their pieces will evolve but having confidence in each other is nothing short of magic. Nick observes that ‘We’re quite different players, so it should be interesting.’
