Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.

Tuesdays 7 - 9PM over four weeks starting 30 July 2019 with Libby Brookbanks.

What makes an artwork a work of art? The boundaries of art practice are becoming increasingly blurry. Learn about contemporary art practices both within New Zealand and abroad. Become part of a passionate discussion around the controversies and challenges of contemporary art.

What makes a stuffed shark worth $12 million? Ask the hard questions - what would you like to understand about contemporary art? Be prepared to be shocked and intrigued.

Expected learning outcomes:
- Understand the elusive definition of contemporary art.
- Contribute to critical discourse about contemporary art practices.
- Evaluate contemporary artworks.
- Discuss contemporary New Zealand art practices.

Who should attend? Anyone with a passion for questioning social constructs and the mystery of the art market should attend this dynamic course.

From tutor Libby Brookbanks: I'm both fascinated and challenged by contemporary art. My PhD thesis considers some of the many conceptual complexities of contemporary art practices. Come and indulge your interests in some lively discussion and debate.
