Unitec Year 1 & 2 Costume Showcase 2019.
Kororāreka The Hell Hole of The Pacific.
Due to popular demand Unitec’s School of Creative Industries is offering schools the opportunity to view their annual Costume Exhibition showcasing the talents of their Year 1 and 2 Costume Design & Management students.
This showcase takes you on a journey through Aotearoa’s history featuring real figures from our past and the costumes they would have worn. In the early 1800’s Kororāreka, now known as Russell, was unearthed as one of New Zealand’s first settlements. Originally described as having prosperous land and a good harbour, Kororāreka was on the cutting edge of trade. Local Maori embraced the new changes and began trading their own noa (common) items, and even their tapu (sacred) items or taonga.
Unitec costume students have put together an exhibition as a response to the melting pot of characters that resided together in Kororāreka. From settlers to traders to European visitors and Maori warriors. Making New Zealand history.
Opening Night Friday, 20 September at 5pm-8pm
Exhibitions runs 23-27 September at 10am-4pm
Venue: Te Po Gallery, Building One, Unitec School of Creative Industries
Entry 1, Carrington Rd, Mt Albert, Auckland
