Grant’s Arts and Music Festival proudly presents “War and Peace” Centenary Commemoration Viola Recital (1919-2019), featuring Milan Milisavljević (Principal Viola at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, USA/Canada) and Sherry Grant (Piano, NZ).

This is a series of 3 viola recitals performing the 1919 viola sonatas by Rebecca Clarke and Paul Hindemith, along with compositions by Arvo Pärt, Peter Bryom-Smith (UK), Richard Dubugnon (France) and a newly commissioned work by Chris Artley (NZ).

The “War and Peace” Arts and Music Festival 2019 opens with the viola recital at the Pah Homestead (23 May 6:30-8:30 pm with accompanying art exhibition from 5:30 pm), then St Luke’s Church Remuera (24 May 7-9pm with art exhibition from 6pm) and St Andrews on the Terrace Wellington (25 May 7-9pm, recital only).

The viola recital programme consists of viola music composed 1919 to 2019, including a newly commissioned NZ work, and two premieres.

(3) Peter Byrom-Smith (UK): What Goes Around...Comes Around (NZ Premiere)
(4) Chris Artley (NZ): An Anzac Reflection (World Premiere)
(5) Paul Hindemith: Viola Sonata Op.11, No.4
(6) Richard Dubugnon (France): Lied, op.44b

Other concerts ($40/$30) performed by NZ musicians during this festival are Purely Chinese, Just Jazz, Simply Woodwind, Mostly Strings, and Voice Only (26-30 May 7-9pm, with art exhibition starting from 6 pm) at the Metropolis Museum, 116 Symonds St, Auckland CBD.

“War and Peace” art exhibition will be at the Metropolis Museum daily 10am-4pm on 26-31 May 2019, with a combination of visual arts, sculptures, photography, poetry, calligraphy inspired by the theme and created by NZ, Chinese and other international artists. There will also be workshops where you can see NZ artists at work on site. An art auction will be held at 6-9pm on 31 May to conclude the festival.
