Rotorua Museum, in conjunction with Plunket Rotorua, are hosting an information morning about wahakura (traditional woven flax bassinet for young babies).
The free demonstration will take place on Saturday 29 June 2019 at 10am, and will be located at Te Rūnanga Tea House (Government Gardens).
Wahakura are presently being distributed as a safe infant sleeping device amongst New Zealand Māori, and offer a safer alternative to direct bed-sharing.
The benefit of wahakura is that they allow the infant to be in close proximity to their parents (particularly as co-sleeping is a cultural custom for Māori) but also to be in their own environment, free from the risks.
Information and advice will be on hand from Plunket Rotorua and expert weavers will be demonstrating the process of weaving wahakura throughout the morning.
For further information please contact Rotorua Museum, phone 07 351 8055 or email tori.williams@rotorualc.nz
