Nature needs us!

You can make a difference and help fight the War on Weeds. The weediest places are often those closest to towns as over 70% of invasive weeds were originally garden plants. Get involved to prevent new weed species damaging our ecosystems and species - that includes endangering our rare and threatened birds.

The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and the Department of Conservation, supported by Weedbusters, invite you to bring a weed from your garden to the Napier Soundshell on Saturday 21 September and swap it for a free native plant. We have 200 native plants to give away.

Talk to Darin Underhill, Biosecurity Pest Plant Advisor, Hawke's Bay Regional Council who can help identify invasive, unusual or unwanted pests weeds on your property. Visit for more information on pest weeds in Hawke’s Bay.

Collect a free copy of Weedbusters “Plant Me Instead – East Coast & Hawke’s Bay” publication to give you some ideas on what you can do in your own backyard to help protect New Zealand’s precious environment. Weedbusters is a weeds awareness and education programme that aims to protect our environment from the increasing weed problem. Visit

No registration necessary, just turn up on the day. Swaps available until stock runs out.

This event is part of Conservation Week 2019 -

The first ever Conservation Week was launched by SCOUTS New Zealand in 1969. It was taken over by the Nature Conservation Council then managed by DOC since 1987.

This year, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Conservation Week, we’d like to acknowledge this milestone and encourage people to think about the next 50 years.
