Government House is the home of New Zealand’s Governor-General. The house was opened in 1910 and extensively refurbished between 2008-11. It is a category 1 historic place. The tours start in the visitor centre with displays and films, and then tour the main house. Weather and mobility permitting we will also tour some of the grounds. The grounds include the remains of the Mt View Lunatic Asylum which was opened in 1873.
Tours are fully guided. Please note that while the visitor centre and house are mobility friendly, some of our grounds are hilly. NZSL interpreters can be arranged dependent on notice and availability. Tours are free, but places are limited and must be booked in advance.
ID required on entry. Parking available but cars must be pre registered on the booking form.
This tour is 2 hours long. Please consider this if booking places for children.
Entry is only through Hospital Road gate. People must be pre-booked for admittance. Bookings open now.
