An outdoor concert combining the grand traditions of opera, waiata and kappa haka performed by New Zealand Opera School past and current students in association with Putiki Marae to celebrate the School’s twenty-fifth anniversary.

Opera and Aroha is a spectacular theatrical, live music event, staged on a floating pontoon with streamers Waimarie and Wairua as backdrops. The event is intended for a broad-based family audience. This innovative and entertaining production is inspired by the unique location and the strong bond between the NZ Opera School and Putiki Marae.

Arias, duets and choruses from well-known opera, some in their original languages, others in Maori, will be interspersed with waiata and Kapa haka, both traditional and contemporary. The concert will include performers from Putiki Marae and some of the amazing young voices of the NZ Opera School past and current students. Also participating will be a quartet from Brass Whanganui.

The production will be highly visual with colourful costumes, and a big screen on the riverbank will show the singers close-up. As the sun sets on this location of outstanding natural beauty and the concert continues into the evening, the river will be bathed in light.

Modelled on the grand tradition of a ‘highlights’ concert in a beautiful setting, the show is conceived in two halves of approximately 50 minutes each, with a 30 minute picnic interval.
