Whatever happened to Auckland's first professional theatre? Join Murray Edmond for this talk about Auckland’s Community Arts Service Theatre, known as CAS Theatre.
In New Zealand, after the Second World War, many cultural institutions, such as the National Library and Landfall magazine, were founded and found financial support, but theatre was slow to join the new institutions. In Auckland, a number of writers produced plays but who would stage them? Auckland’s Community Arts Service Theatre was founded by adult education staff at Auckland University College in 1946. CAS Theatre, as it was known, was Auckland's first professional theatre, lasting from 1946 to 1962.
This talk is associated with the Auckland Libraries exhibition Curtain Up!
