Iconic Kiwi pop songs reinvented as leading edge jazz - six exceptional vocalists, seven of New Zealand's finest jazz instrumentalists perform Alchemy live for the first time ever.

Join singers Allana Goldsmith Music, Caitlin Smith, Chelsea Prastiti, Lou'ana, Marjan Nelson and Rachel Clarke and their all-star band of Kevin Field (piano), Richard Hammond (bass), Roger Manins (saxophone), Mike Booth (trumpet), Ron Samsom and Stephen Thomas (drums), and Michael Howell (guitar) for One Night Only of Alchemy.

Alchemy reinvents and celebrates the best of 80 years of Kiwi pop songwriting, from Blue Smoke, written by Maori Battalion member Ruru Karaitiana in 1940, (New Zealand’s first homegrown written and recorded international pop hit), to Brown Girl, Aaradhna’s poignant 2016 plea for an end to racial stereotyping in Aotearoa.

The big musical milestones are all there, including Nature from 1969; the 1980s hits – Maxine, Glad I’m Not A Kennedy, Counting The Beat, and Slice Of Heaven; the massive international success of Don’t Dream It’s Over and Royals; the heartbreak of I Hope I Never, the quirkiness of Suddenly Strange, and the heartfelt social message of Sensitive To A Smile.

It’s a whimsical journey through the soundtrack to our lives, full of great pop melodies, evocative lyrics, and bold new jazz arrangements. Alchemy is where historical pop perfection meets leading edge jazz innovation – two world’s collide – and the audience is the winner on the night!

The idea is irresistible: iconic Kiwi pop songs transformed and given new life as leading edge jazz, without losing any of their original beauty and integrity. The delivery, by six of New Zealand’s finest vocalists and seven truly magnificent jazz instrumentalists, is spectacular.
