Toi Warbrick has dug a hole through the earth and discovered 16th century Spain. Be spellbound by their story in song, nga taonga puoro and evocative imagery, which makes sense of time and place. At the heart of Antipodeans is the commissioned work ‘Ciento Ochenta’ by NZ composer Pepe Becker.
This work combines early music with NZ poetry by Apirana Taylor and Leonel Alvarado, new art music and traditional Maori instrumentation. Initially named TAHI80, ANTIPODEANS toured to town halls in the Manawatu and Rangitikei districts in 2016, and the following year, performed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, and in San Martin de Valdeiglesias, Spain – the town exactly opposite Palmerston North – ‘through the hole’.

TOI WARBRICK opens the world of ngā taonga pūoro to music lovers through innovative and experimental bicultural works calling on history, imagination and emotion. The Palmerston North based ensemble has performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, New Zealand Fringe, and in Oxford (UK), San Martin de Valdeiglesias (Spain), and around New Zealand since 2008. Warren Warbrick (Rangitāne ki Manawatū, Te Arawa) is a renowned maker of ngā taonga pūoro and one of approx. 100 living Māori artists entitled to use the Toi Iho trademark. His work is held in public and private collections around the world, including National Museums Scotland. Warren is tohunga whakairo for his iwi and involved in a wide range of cultural arts and practices. In 2018 Warren represented New Zealand at the Medellín International Poetry Festival, Colombia, in respect of cultural knowledge and metaphor. Virginia Warbrick (Ngāti Pākehā), a former member of the NZ Secondary Students’ Choir, is a classically-trained musician. A creative producer with a masters of art management (AUT) and architecture degree (VUW), Virginia is the Chamber Music NZ Manawatū concert manager and a printmaker with drawings/ prints in the public collections of Te Papa, National Library, and Te Manawa Art Gallery.
