Otago Museum

In this hands-on workshop, Otago Museum Director and keen astrophotographer Dr Ian Griffin will guide you through the process of taking photographs of the night sky.

Starting with the basics, you’ll learn how to use your camera and tripod to get good pictures of the night sky, and, weather permitting, Ian will demonstrate how to take pictures of the moon, stars, and planets using telescopes.

Participants will leave Otago Museum at 4pm and will be driven to a Dunedin location perfect for night sky photography, returning to the museum around 9pm.

Participants will need to bring the following with them:

A camera capable of shooting long exposures
A tripod Portable stool/camp chair
Binoculars
A head torch (ideally one with a red light)
You will be exposed to cold, outdoor conditions, so please dress warmly. We suggest you bring a flask of something hot, and snacks. Please note, there will be no bathroom facilities.

Numbers will be kept strictly to ten attendees, and travel will be via an 18 seat mini-bus to allow space for social distancing. The location of the workshop can be provided to attendees should they prefer to travel independently.

4pm – 9pm, Saturday 27 June
Departing from the Museum Foyer
$50 per person, limited numbers, bookings essential.
