Harmen Vanhoorne is an international cornet soloist from Belgium.
He has been performing as a soloist all over the world, including the United Kingdom, the USA, China, Russia, Canada, South-Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and most of the European Union countries.
He is known in the music world as an innovator of his instrument, the cornet, commissioning various international composers on a regular basis, trying to expand the repertoire of the cornet.
In this context, Harmen is one of the very few official Endorsers for the worldly renowned brand Besson, being actively involved in the actual development of the modern cornet.

He first gained notoriety in 2007 when he joined the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides as cornet Soloist. Since then, his list of achievements includes awards in major solo competitions as well as soloist prizes in contests all around the world.
In 2011 Harmen was granted the title of International Soloist of the Year after winning both the famous British Open Solo Competition (UK) and the Ern Keller Memorial Trophy (AUS).
Harmen studied at the renowned Lemmensinstituut in Leuven (B) where he concluded his studies with the highest distinction for his postgraduate Master.

Black Tears was originally composed in April 2016 in memory of the 29 men who lost their lives in the Pike River Mine Disaster in 2010.
Originally written for Bb Cornet & Orchestra, this work depicts the aftermath of the tragedy. After viewing tapes of the memorial service, TV coverage of the aftermath, reading articles about the tragedy and speaking to members of the NZ public about their reactions to the disaster, the composer depicts (from start to finish) the sombre and mournful reaction of the nation after 29 miners were trapped in the Pike River Mine, and then later lost their lives after a 2nd and 3rd explosion.
The piece of music finishes with an audio recording of raindrops in a puddle, recorded near the Pike River Mine on the 24th November 2011, exactly one year after the 2nd explosion that killed all 29 miners. The audio recording is started on the downbeat of the final bar. If timed correctly, after the soloist and band are cut off, there are 29 seconds of raindrops – one second for every miner that perished.
Black Tears has been arranged by the composer for Soloist & Brass Band, Soloist & Piano, as well as the original version for Soloist and Orchestra.
This version of Black Tears was specially adapted for Belgium cornet soloist, Harmen Vanhoorne.
