Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.

This workshop will run on Saturday 17 October 2020 10 AM - 4 PM.

This workshop offers an overview of Australian Indigenous Art, beginning with Aboriginal rock carvings, body paintings and ground designs, and ending with the most recent developments in new media.

We will look at the relationship between Aboriginal art and culture and the cultural differences that exist between different tribes, languages, dialects and geographic landscapes. We will also cover issues to do with copyright and appropriation and how Aboriginal art fits within the current art market.

Expected learning outcomes:
- An understanding of the diversity of indigenous culture, and the differences between tribes, languages and cultures
- Knowledge of the wide range of artistic styles and mediums encompassed by indigenous art practices
- An understanding of the role of art in Aboriginal life, both in the past and in the present
- An awareness of the issues surrounding copyright and appropriation of indigenous art
- An awareness of how indigenous art fits into the contemporary art market

Presenter Ashlee Lala completed a Masters of Art Curatorship at the University of Melbourne in 2016 and during that time became fascinated by Australian Indigenous art and culture.
