A fundraising evening hosted by the Picton Museum and Historical Society.

Featuring the documentary film The Russians Are Coming which examines an unusual Aotearoa first encounter between Maori and Russians in 1820, when Queen Charlotte Sound was visited by Russian Navy ships Vostok (Commander Fabian Bellingshausen) and Mirnyy. ( Captain Mikhail Lazarev).

Screened with special permission from presenter Moana Maniapoto and producer/director Toby Mills.

Also The Maori of 1820, a talk by Sir Tipene O'Regan. Who were the iwi in the Sounds when the Russian Navy sailed in and whose were the artefacts now housed in Russian museums? Sir Tipene will explain the local context.
