Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that helps people develop strength, power, flexibility, motor coordination, musical skills, socialisation, besides learn a self defense.
It was created between 1530 and 1888. There was slavery in Brazil at that time, thousands of Africans were taken to Brazil in that time from many different countries of African continent, each region of Africa had its own culture, music, dances and martial arts. The Portuguese used to mix up different nationalities, ethnicities and languages, to complicate their union.
Once sold as slaves they were not allowed to practice any type of martial art, but they still could keep celebrating their parties, religion ceremonies and dances. That is when Capoeira was made up by mixing all different African Martial arts from every region of African, and camouflaging this new art with dancing steps and music.
When slaves fled the farms, they were persecuted and used Capoeira as a defense.
