Mel Bunce and Patrick Crewdson discuss journalism and democracy.
Dire warnings of the global collapse of the Fourth Estate come amid the potential for a major shake-up of the media in Aotearoa. Proposed mergers of our biggest media companies and our public broadcasters are on the agenda, alongside a pressing need for free, fair, and trustworthy journalism ahead of the General Election. Where to from here for the NZ media in a world of fake news and upheaval in the industry? Mel Bunce is joined by Stuff Editor in Chief Patrick Crewdson to discuss the state of the broken estate and the solutions needed to ensure its future.
Mel Bunce is originally from New Zealand and currently researches and teaches journalism at City, University of London. She is the author of The Broken Estate: Journalism and Democracy in a Post-Truth World.
Patrick Crewdson was named Editorial Executive of the Year at the 2019 Voyager Media Awards, and is soon to take up the Wolfson Fellowship to study at Cambridge University.
