Cantando is celebrating! After Covid-19 restrictions forced the cancellation of our May and September concerts this year, the choir is excited that we can finally stage a performance. Further cause for celebration is the fact that Cantando’s new Musical Director, Kolitha (Koli) Jayatunge will at last have the opportunity to conduct the choir in a public performance!

Koli is well-known in the Waikato as a soloist and choral conductor. He added Cantando to his portfolio at the beginning of 2020. Before lockdown, and the recent Level 2 restrictions, he was preparing the choir for two very different concerts – the first, a programme of inspirational works and, in the second, some favourite and familiar pieces from Cantando’s past repertoire to celebrate the end of lockdown. Celebration! features items from both concerts, plus – because it’s nearly Christmas – a bracket of Christmas carols with audience participation!

Eminent Auckland organist, John Wells, had been booked as accompanist for the May Inspiration concert and Cantando is delighted that he has generously agreed to join us for this concert instead. John will accompany the choir in the first half of the programme and play for the Christmas carols. There will also be the chance to enjoy the impressive range and sound of the Cathedral’s pipe organ when John plays some works for solo organ which he’s chosen specially for this concert.
In the Favourites and Familiars section of the programme, Cantando’s talented resident accompanist, David Woodcock, will be at the keyboard.

Founded 32 years ago, Cantando is a community choir noted for the versatility of its repertoire. From Proms to Messiah, Swing to Verdi’s Requiem, Cantando has risen to the challenge of presenting a variety of musical genres over the years and this concert is no exception. Come and celebrate with us!
