Singer songwriter Carole King has been active on the music scene since 1958, initially as one of the staff songwriters at the Brill Building and later as a solo artist. She wrote or co-wrote over 100 pop hits which featured on the charts in the US and the UK,
King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. Her album Tapestry topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971
Tonight is an opportunity to pay tribute to the song writing of Carole King. Brush up a couple of favourites to perform, or come along and listen to local performers' renditions of songs from King's extensive catalogue.
Performers - to avoid double-ups, please let us know which 2 songs you'd like to perform by emailing Carole Stewart who is coordinating the night - mcstew@slingshot.co.nz.
