Cellists of Otago is a Dunedin based ensemble directed by Dr Heleen du Plessis and comprises University of Otago students, Dunedin Symphony Orchestra cellists, high school pupils and community cellists. They delight audiences with the variety of their innovative programmes and have won praise from audiences and critics alike. In 2016 the Wanaka Mirror described their music as “delightful”, “captivating”, “enthralling” and “a treat”.
The Cellists of Otago foster collaboration between institutions and the community by creating an environment in which students and professional artists perform and interact. They enhance musicianship skills and create an awareness of cello in the region.
Reviewers have described the Cellists of Otago as having “rich sonority”, and “intriguing and appealing sound” which “has quickly and worthily gained wide recognition”.
Cellists of Otago guest artists, all of national and international standing, have included Anna Leese, Stephen Diaz, Matthew Marshall, Luca Manghi, Nick Cornish, Peter Adams, Tom McGrath, Graham Downes and Sophie Morris.
The Wanaka concert will feature renowned New Zealand soprano, Rebecca Ryan, in a programme packed with much-loved songs for cello ensemble and duo.
Promising to sing their way into your hearts, Cellists of Otago have chosen songs from well-known operas, musicals and cello repertoire such as Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise and one of the most popular works for cello ensemble and soprano, Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5.
