Guitarist Brad Kang and saxophonist Jimmy Rainey are excited to return to CJC this October with a new set of original music. After moving back to Aotearoa from New York and Amsterdam respectively as a result of COVID-19, Brad and Jimmy were unexpectedly reunited in Ōtautahi for the first time in years. Picking up right where they left off; the pair will present a concert of their own stylish takes on modern jazz, featuring a band of Auckland's finest.
Jazz guitarist and composer Brad Kang is a recent addition to the New York City jazz scene. The Korean-born guitarist hails from Christchurch, New Zealand. A graduate of the acclaimed program at the University of North Texas, Kang was a part of the world-renowned One O’Clock Lab Band. Their album ‘Lab 2015’, which Kang was a part of as a composer and player, received a Grammy nomination for one of its tracks ‘Neil’.
Kang has performed and toured across both New Zealand and the United States appearing in various jazz festivals along the way. He was awarded the Best of Fest People’s Choice Award for his performance consisting of his original compositions, at the Wellington Jazz Festival in 2017.
He is currently working towards his Master’s of Music in jazz performance at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, privately studying with Mike Moreno.
He has performed with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Arturo Sandoval, Doc Severinson, Mike LeDonne, Wycliffe Gordon, Mike Clark and Ben Van Gelder.
Jimmy Rainey is a Christchurch-based saxophonist and composer. He is an award-winning graduate of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, as well as Christchurch's own Ara Music Arts programme. Jimmy has performed at a variety of venues and festivals around Europe and Aotearoa, including Paradiso, Bimhuis, Zwarte Cross, Amsterdam Open Air, and all the major NZ Jazz festivals. He has worked and performed with Snarky Puppy, Bob Mintzer, Reinier Baas, John Clayton, Terell Stafford, Dick Oatts, Jesse van Ruller, Miho Hazama, Shapeshifter, and the Jong Metropole Orkest.
