Dr David Lowe
Adjunct professor Antarctic Research Centre, Victoria University of Wellington, NZ
Dave spent his early life in Taranaki and in 1970 he became the first person in NZ to measure increases in atmospheric CO2 working with Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California and the New Zealand DSIR. After completing a PhD in atmospheric chemistry at Cologne University, Dave worked at several scientific institutes in Germany, NZ and the USA on projects investigating the sources of atmospheric CO2 and methane. He is one of two New Zealand lead authors on the United Nations IPCC 4th assessment report on climate change WG1. For ground breaking contribution to human knowledge on climate change science, contributors to this report were jointly awarded the 2007 Nobel peace prize.
He acted as New Zealand’s science coordinator with Germany from 2012 to 2018 promoting a wide variety of bilateral science and engineering projects. During his career as an atmospheric scientist, Dave has personally witnessed more than 30% growth in atmospheric CO2.
