What happens when an artist isn’t the maker of their own work? From Michelangelo and Sandro Botticelli, to Damien Hirst and Anish Kapoor, explore the relationship between artist and maker with Jon Geehan, the Gallery’s Exhibition Coordinator.

Society holds a romantic notion of the artist, picturing a lone figure like Vincent Van Gogh painting in the French countryside. However, there are examples throughout the history of art that contradict this idealised version of an artist at work. Renaissance artists commonly employed apprentices in their workshops to assist, and contemporary artists like Jeff Koons sees the artists’ role as one to conceive ideas for artworks, leaving the physical production to technical experts.

After the 45 minute talk, you are invited to stay for a community kōrero over a cup of tea and refreshments, finishing at 1pm.
