Te Papa Atawhai/Department of Conservation will once again be holding Tūao Rāapa/Volunteer Wednesday. This will be our first one back following lock down, and it’s conservation week!
For conservation week this year our theme is "He tirohanga hou ki te taiao" or “Nature through new eyes” which recognises how the lockdown period brought about a change in perspective for many people and the new appreciation we gained for the positive impacts nature has on our wellbeing. Join us at Ruapekapeka Pa and spend a day outdoors with our rangers and help out by planting trees.

Ruapekapeka Pa is an important part of New Zealand history and is the best-preserved land war battlefield in New Zealand. The ditch and bank defences, a carronade used by Chief Kawiti and the earthen defences of the British forward position are still visible. Significant upgrades are being undertaken at the site so we can best share its story with visitors.

To celebrate Conservation Week, and our first volunteer day following lockdown, we’ll provide lunch and host an informative talk by an archaeologist about the Pa.

What to bring:
Good, covered footwear, gardening gloves, rain/sun protection, a spade if you have one, water and some snacks.

Our rough guide for the day will be:

9.30am – Gather, have introductions and discuss the days tasks.
10.00am – Get into the work.
Midday – Lunch break.
12.30pm – Talk and guided walk around site.
1.30pm – Continue work.
2.45pm – Pack up.
3.00pm - Depart

Meet at Ruapekapeka Pa at 9.30am, contact us (WhangareiCommunity@doc.govt.nz) if you require transport. This event is part of Conservation Week 2020.
