Whether with capers, salsa, Sri Lankan Dance, classical contemporary, hip-hop or whatever genre, Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ (SGCNZ) is again welcoming choreographers to create items of 3 to 10 minutes for between 2 and 30 performers.

In association with Hannah Playhouse and DANZ, SGCNZ’s Dance Nimble Soles will provide the chance for having fun with exploring and interpreting the eternal themes, relationships and issues found in all the Bard’s works through dance.

Midst the gloom of current outbreaks, this is an opportunity to break out and include a touch of any of Shakespeare’s characters or plays or poems into a short work to celebrate International Dance Day on 29 April.

Participants may be of any age and the cast may include live musicians. In fact, use of live original music and song is welcomed. SGCNZ cannot cover the costs of anything under copyright. It does, however, have entrants in its SGCNZ/Morrison Music Trust Shakespeare Music Composition Competition, who are very keen to partner with choreographers.

Last year’s inaugural evening of performances included NZSL, VR Dance, Sri Lankan, contemporary and traditional dance in the form a lively jig by all the participants. WHEN (Wellington Homeschool Education Network performed an item encompassing Joan of Arc, while the group which came over from Kuranui College had danced up a storm, based on The Tempest.

“Dance is arguably the oldest form of celebration,” said SGCNZ CEO, Dawn Sanders, “This event provides a platform for pan-cultural and dance forms to join forces in association with the greatest of playwrights internationally.”
