Antarctic Heritage Trust invites you to explore Sir Edmund Hillary’s Antarctic hut through a new, ground-breaking virtual reality (VR) experience. Learn about how the Trust created this fully immersive VR experience in partnership with Auckland University of Technology, then experience it for yourself following the presentation.
Hillary’s Hut marks the foundation of New Zealand’s Scott Base. It was established during the summer of 1956–57 when a party of 23 men, under the leadership of Sir Edmund Hillary, wintered over and engaged in exploration and important scientific research. The party also laid supply depots from the Ross Sea towards the South Pole for Dr Vivian Fuchs, who was crossing the continent from the Weddell Sea as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (TAE) and the International Geophysical Year (IGY). Hillary succeeded in completing his task for the TAE and, in a final push, gained the South Pole, accomplishing only the third overland trip to the Pole, following in the footsteps of Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott.
