Think Talk: The Job Stealers - How will robots change the future of work?
Tuesday 23 June 2020 7:30 - 8:30 PM

Robots are not coming, they are here now! From factories to our homes, robots are changing the way we do things. Just read the papers, soon our jobs will be gone and we will bow to our robot overlords! Or will we? Are robots really that good?

In this talk, I’ll cover some of the myths around robots and AI, especially their potential to steal our jobs and livelihood. I’ll show several examples of what robots are good at and what they are bad at, based on the research at The University of Auckland and overseas. In particular, I’ll look at three different domains: agriculture, healthcare and education. The aim of the talk is to give the audience a better perspective of what types of jobs robots will do in the (near) future and what will be left for us humans.

About Dr Craig Sutherland
Dr Craig Sutherland is a professional teaching fellow in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering, where he teaches the next generation of engineers to build robots and other systems. Previously, he worked in the Centre for Automation and Robotics Engineering Science (CARES), where he explored how people and robots can interact together, and how to improve robots in healthcare. Prior to getting a PhD in Human Computer Education, he worked in healthcare, education and software engineering.

Craig’s research focuses on two areas: how robots interact with people and how people learn to program computers. These interests conclude in teaching children how to program robots, especially his own. He regularly visits schools around Auckland to introduce robots and programming, so the next generation will be inspired to improve our robots.

Please register for this talk so we can plan seating for the expected numbers. A small donation on arrival at the door is appreciated but not compulsory.
