Exquisite paintings on scrolls and golden screens by Japan’s greatest artists of the ‘golden’ Edo period (1603–1868) beguile with their vision of the pleasures and fantasies of life under shogun-ruled Japan. Ukiyo-e – delicate paintings and brightly-coloured woodblock prints – celebrate the characters, places and pastimes of a flourishing era during Japan’s self-imposed isolation from the world.

Images in this exhibition encompass the elite charms of the Yoshiwara Pleasure Quarter of Edo (Tokyo), known as the ‘Floating World’, with its beautiful courtesans and entertainments, as well as popular iconic and seasonal landmarks, including rare depictions of snow-capped Fujisan (Mount Fuji), waterfalls, rivers and blossoming trees.

Visitors are introduced to the symbolic world of animals and to the imaginary realms of myth and legend, inhabited by dragons and fantastic beings. Drawn from private collections across Japan, this exhibition offers a unique chance to encounter rare images of an enchanted world, long-hidden from Western eyes.
