Watch Hot Girl On Girl Action dissected reassembled and resurrected by Two Hot Femmes!

In FEMININE HYGIENE, Two Hot Femme Babes Virginia (The Lady Garden) and Marika (A Symphony of Sloths) go beyond the unicorn to smash the male gaze and present their findings of what it means to be Hot Queer Femmes on their own terms.

FEMININE HYGIENE is a collaboration between performance artists Marika Pratley (Wellington) and Virginia Kennard (Christchurch) which premiered at Kirikiriroa Fringe Festival 2019. Taking the form of a performance research essay, this is a devised performance exploring concepts behind cisgender woman queer femme identity.

Investigating the tensions between having autonomy over conventional feminine/femme identity/behaviours, and the fetishisation of lesbian/bisexual femme identities under capitalist-patriarchal social relations, together Marika and Virginia will ask what it means to be femme, queer cis women while simultaneously challenging power dynamics of cisheteronormative patriarchy and late capitalism.

Using sexy and playful performance to raise questions of queer feminist life, Marika and Virginia invite their audience to reflect on their own lived experiences, and hope to reveal how identity is shaped by negotiating between the dialectic of self and society’s collective concepts of gender and sexuality.

Marika Pratley is an award-winning composer, sonic artist, improviser and performer of Greek and Cypriot-descent, based in Wellington, New Zealand. Her composition work includes using found objects, Indonesian Gamelan, Greek Folk Instruments, synthesizers and field recordings. Conceptually, Marika's work explores radical relaxation, the phenomenology of spacetime, trauma recovery and intersectional identity politics. Her music and academic work has been presented in New Zealand and internationally, and received nominations and honorary mentions for sound design and composition, notably A Symphony of Sloths.

Virginia Kennard is a live artist and movement practitioner from Wellington, and is currently based in Ōtautahi making performance. She has spent the summer undertaking a residency at the Arts Village Rotorua. Virginia trained in classical, contemporary, and commercial dance techniques from childhood, and holds a Master of Arts Performance from Leeds Beckett University (UK). She creates feminist explicit performance in a queer theory framework. She is interested in the body, her cis white queer femme sex worker body, as a powerhouse that can subvert and dismantle the objectifying gaze.
