Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.

This course is available twice in 2020 starting 10 June or 9 October. Each course comprises three evenings 7 - 9pm and two Saturday morning session between.

Tutor: Ian Eng

Learn to take creative photos of flowers just like on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest! This course will teach you how to take effective indoor shots plus how to take outdoor photos of plants/flowers you see when you're out and about.

Course outline:
- creating a pleasing composition
- locations and seasons e.g. when and where to find cherry blossoms
- managing lighting and backgrounds
- creative set up
- camera techniques
- use of macro lenses and other accessories demonstrated
- basic editing tools such as creating mood photos, cropping, adjusting colour and texture.

One off-site session will be held at the Auckland Wintergardens with its huge range of flowers and plants to shoot. The second off-site session will be discussed with the group on the first night - this may include another field trip or perhaps a visit from a florist. Ian will set up a Facebook group for the class to share photos and ideas. Full notes will be provided.

Expected learning outcomes:
- Learn to use the best camera mode, settings, macro/close-up options to take the best possible floral photos with your camera
- Understand how lighting affects the photo and show to control it.
- Choose the best flowers for photos and the best backgrounds.
- Understanding of how to compose and arrange your photo and tips for greater creativity
- Confidence in choosing the best images, editing for creativity and presentation, sharing online.

Who should attend this course? Those with digital cameras who have an interest and passion for photography, nature and flowers but lack the camera skills, ideas and inspiration to take photos they could be proud of. You should already know how to basically use your camera i.e. turning it on, zooming. We have a DSLR Beginners Photography class available if you are unable to use your camera yet.

What to bring: Bring some flowers / foliage for the first session - keep it simple - something from the garden is fine. You may wish to bring a jar or vase if that seems appropriate for your flowers. Bring your own digital camera. Cameras should have adjustable functions such as aperture mode (A or AV). Standard kit lenses are fine. If you have a macro lens, bring this. Ensure your camera battery is charged and that you have space available on your SD card.

Our mission is to provide quality affordable and accessible lifelong learning opportunities for our community.
