Is the Treaty a Joke? – The Treaty of Waitangi 180 Years On

St. Georges Anglican Church sits on the site of the Battle of Gate Pa. Each year we offer free lectures to help people understand our history and how it shapes our present.

“Is the Treaty a Joke?” – the Treaty of Waitangi in its 180th year. This topic, in the light of other recent comments that it is past its use by date and that the Treaty should be burnt, seems timely.

Buddy Mikaere is a former Director of the Waitangi Tribunal and a historian with an extensive list of publications. He is a consultant working largely in the resource consents area and has a national client base.

In Tauranga he represents the environmental interests of several local iwi/hapu in their interface with local Councils and developers. He is currently writing a biography of the Hauhau prophet Kereopa Te Rau; the man convicted of the murder of the missionary Carl Volkner in Opotiki in 1865.

There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion at the end of the presentation.
