Jay Emcee Trio is an Ōtautahi Christchurch-based bassless trio with a dynamic and eclectic sound. The band performs original music and new renditions of classic tunes.
The trio takes its name from bass player and founding member Dr Jayson Emcee. Emcee grew up on the plains of Central Africa, and recalls improvising to the rhythms of wild buffalo stampeding across the open safari. After completing studies in humanitarian science and jazz history, Emcee emigrated to New Zealand in the late 90s.
In early 2020, Emcee met Josh Saville (trumpet), Mitch Dwyer (guitar), and Cam Finlay (drums), forming a quartet with the common goal of sound exploration and creative improvisation. The group takes inspiration from the likes of John Raymond & Real Feels, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Gilad Hekselman.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, Emcee embarked on a grand global expedition. He told fellow band members, he was searching for something, but would not say what. With Emcee unable to re-enter New Zealand, the band reformed as a bassless trio.
Don’t miss the opportunity to witness their debut at the Wellington Jazz Festival in November.
