“The subject of this exhibition is landscapes around Auckland – landscapes that I know well and love. I consider myself an Aucklander, having come here to go to Elam School of Fine Arts in the 1970’s – and this is the place where I paint and teach painting at Auckland Grammar School.
My paintings are often described by critics and buyers alike, as Acadian, Romantic, polished and even spiritual. This is encouraging, as I am always attempting to create an emotional connection to these local landscapes.
The artist has a role to record and give an account of the collective memories of a community. I hope my paintings have the effect of seeming to conjure up past experiences. The absence of people or references to specific time periods, allows a free play of memory for the viewer.” - Justin Boroughs, 2020
