For the 12th time in a row, the Kowhai Festival is organising a Movie Night for families with a free film for all sponsored by Barfoot & Thompson, Warkworth & Mangawhai. The committee has chosen "The Goonies" (PG) as it fits to Halloween. The movie starts at 8pm while there will be some relaxing music and a coffee stall & sausage sizzle from 7pm. Families are welcome to bring their own picnic. As the ground might still be a bit damp it’s probably a good idea to bring a chair or some seating as well as some warm clothes.

‘The Goonies’ is a 1985 American adventure comedy film co-produced and directed by Richard Donner from a screenplay by Chris Columbus, based on a story by executive producer Steven Spielberg. In the film, a band of kids who live in the "Goon Docks" neighbourhood, attempt to save their homes from foreclosure and in doing so, they discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. During the adventure, they are chased by a family of criminals who want the treasure for themselves.

Produced by Spielberg the film grossed $124 million worldwide on a budget of $19 million and has since become a cult film. In 2017, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’.

For the fifth time the Kowhai Festival Movie Night is sponsored by Barfoot & Thompson Warkworth and Mangawhai. The Warkworth based ‘The Travelling Cinema Company’ is again in charge of the show with the biggest outdoor cinema screen in the country, which is 18m wide and 11m high. The company was established in 2003 and was the first big screen outdoor exhibitor in the country.
