'Last Light' a series of new paintings by Auckland based artist Margaret Petchell.
As the light fades from the day into darkness, my imagined secret life of birds emerges, amongst the lush New Zealand bush.
My latest paintings are birds in the night forest within their natural habitat, or else they are juxtaposed brightly lit against foliage where they wouldn’t normally be seen.
The slightly surreal colour palette of black, blues, greens, and yellow tinted skies emphasise that this is the “magic hour” of the day.
