Lost World - Amy Melchior
30 Sandringham St, Dunedin, OtagoRestrictions

A self-taught, award-winning artist, Melchior is an accomplished painter, photographer, and printmaker. Combining two of these mediums, Melchior has developed a technique where she builds up painted encaustic layers (beeswax and resin), which she then engraves to create sculptured surfaces.
In Lost World, Melchior creates intricately detailed encaustic works inspired by the fragile beauty of coral reefs. Many-layered explorations of microcosmic natural forces, the works are full of schools of shooting spores and sprats, shoots unravelling and new cells bubbling up from the deep. With a nod to the honey bee and robust to the touch, the works speak of both the sensual fluidity and structural strength of nature. – Mark Amery
Complementing Melchior's encaustic paintings are a selection of works created by local ceramicist Liz Fea.
