Soft Spot is a solo exhibition by Lucy Meyle driven by a sculptural exploration of types of containers and coverings, from those we interact with in everyday life to the more historic, fetishised or unusual. Looking at materials like slipcovers, crusts, shoes, and various kinds of ‘shells’, the artist considers how these can be interfered with in unexpected or humorous ways.
The title Soft Spot refers to the feeling of a particular tenderness, as well as its secondary meaning of structural weakness or rot. In a similar spirit, this body of work revels in series of tensions: between decoration and function; form and practicality; and a kind of ‘bagginess’ or burden.
About the artist:
Based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Lucy Meyle’s practice uses the absurd as a site for re-imaging and re-imagining our relations to what is human and more-than-human. Moving across sculpture, installation, video, and publication, her practice is engaged in a wilful re-orientation of relationships through humour, collaboration and anti-smooth materiality.
Recent projects include Shifting ground, Silo 6, Tāmaki Makaurau, 2018, Looking forwards and backwards (with Ziggy Lever), Blue Oyster Art Project Space, Ōtepoti Dunedin, Bad Actors, 2017, Meanwhile, Pōneke Wellington, and Serving Suggestions, 2016, RM, Tāmaki Makaurau. She recently completed a practice-led PhD titled “Does a Flower Rehearse for Spring” at Auckland University of Technology.
