Manawatu Relay For Life 2020

Relay For Life is a 24-hour event that sees cancer survivors, carers and those who have lost loved ones to cancer join in remembrance while raising much needed funds.

Team members set up a tent base on campus and take part in the walk/run relay while enjoying a full programme of entertainment and activities.

Teams begin fundraising and raising awareness of the cause well in advance of the event. Each team, which sets its own fundraising goals, has a team captain who co-ordinates the team, helping them to set and achieve goals.

On the day, teams can begin setting up from 7am with registration starting at 9am. Cancer survivors wanting to take part in the lap of honour can register from 11am and collect their survivor sash. The relay begins at midday on Saturday with the emotional lap of honour for cancer survivors, which will see around 300 people walking the track together. Following the lap of honour all teams will complete a lap together then the individual laps begin.

At dusk on Saturday evening a candlelight tribute ceremony is held where friends and families light a candle in memory of those they have lost.

Relay continues throughout the night. Breakfast is cooked and served to all participants with the event concluding at midday Sunday.

Relay For Life is one of the Manawatu Cancer Society’s key fundraising and community engagement activities. It’s for people of ages and fitness levels. Anyone can take part!

Relay For Life is an annual fundraising event and will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year in 2020.
