Matariki Williams (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Hauiti, Taranaki) is the Acting Senior Curator Mātauranga Māori at Te Papa Tongarewa, and a writer and editor.
In her talk, she will explore the breadth of mātauranga Māori that her curatorial team works within and how it encompasses the diversity of Māori experiences. An aspect of this mahi, is the writing about Māori art. As the co-founder of ATE Journal of Māori Art with Bridget Reweti (Ngāi te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui), and co-author of Protest Tautohetohe: Objects of Resistance, Persistence and Defiance with Stephanie Gibson and Puawai Cairns (Ngāi te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāti Pukenga), Matariki writes about Māori art as being part of a continuum. A continuum that has criticality and is artistically, socially and politically formed and debated.
In this kōrero, she will talk about the writing on art from Māori perspectives, creating Māori frameworks through which art can be written about, the whakapapa of Māori artists and writers working together, and working with emerging arts writers.

The 2020 programme reflects the Gallery’s commitment to supporting considered and forward-thinking approaches to the contemporary challenges felt across Taranaki, Aotearoa and the wider Pacific region and has been designed to facilitate extended, interdisciplinary conversations.
