Join textile artist Alice Cowdrey in her studio to needle felt and embroider a picture of Taranaki's beautiful maunga for your wall. Use sheep's wool and a barbed needle to create the piece of art before mounting it in an embroidery hoop.

Alice Cowdrey is an Oakura-based textile artist who specialises in needle felting. She is a resident artist at LUMEN Studios & Gallery and mostly works with sheep’s wool to felt brooches, animals and other works of art. Incorporating cat fur, possum fur and human hair, Alice looks to nature, animals and folk art for inspiration. She hopes to tell stories based on a mythical past through her larger works which are whimsical in nature but have an underlying colonial theme.

Alice took up needle felting eight years a go and got hooked on the medium’s versatile nature and texture. She mostly works with Corriedale wool which has been carded and dyed. Needle felting is a dry felting technique where a barbed needle is used to repeatedly jab fibres. This process tangles and compacts the fibres together. The needle is used as a sculptural tool to create flat or three dimensional pieces of art.

Alice has a degree in art history and history and a post-graduate diploma in journalism. She is currently completing her post-graduate diploma in museum studies through Massey University and hopes to help preserve culture and history through different methods of story telling.
