Join Dr Elizabeth Nichol to hear about the Auckland Society of Arts competition in the 1880s that was held to find the best original compositions by New Zealand composers.

Auckland Society of Arts illustrated catalogue
During the 1880s the Auckland Society of Arts held a competition for the best original compositions by New Zealand composers. Sponsored by Herr Carl Schmitt from the Auckland University College, it produced a range of songs and piano pieces written by local musicians. Join Dr Elizabeth Nichol as she discusses the musicians and their work.

Hear about other original compositions from the time, including those from amateurs such as lawyer Thomas Wood, and engineer Alan Whitehorne, along with Belle Hitchings, who went on to have a stage career. During the presentation, there will be opportunities to hear some of the music performed.
