Join us as we celebrate 60 years of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra (NZSSSO) course. The course runs annually for six days in the Term 1 School Holidays, during which time students experience being part of a full symphony orchestra - culminating in two public performances. This year's conductor, Natalia Raspopova, will lead the students through an exciting programme in preparation for the Formal Concert on Saturday April 18th.
The exciting Sabre Dance by Khachaturian, arranged for percussion, gives a heady start to the concert, followed by Anthony Ritchie’s ‘A Bugle will do’, written to commemorate the death of war hero, Sir Charles Upham - an extremely modest man, when asked some years before his death as to his funeral he replied, “A bugle will do”. Ritchie has used this remark as inspiration for his composition. To complete the first half of the programme we will be buoyed by Mozart’s beautiful Concerto for Flute & Harp, featuring soloist's Isabella Gregory (Flute) & Ning Chiang (Harp).
The Brahms Symphony, a cheerful, almost pastoral work completes this year’s programme as we celebrate 60 years of the NZSSSO course. This will be a wonderful concert celebrating the passion and commitment of our youthful classical musicians.
