Welcome to our Human Rights Film Festival.

In collaboration with Amnesty International, this four-film four-day (20-23 September) mini-festival is open to members of the public on a first-come-first-served basis with free entry to all screenings (koha/donations always appreciated).

Tonight we start with a short film prior to the feature film.

The short documentary is the NZ premier of director Andreas Gallegos's ‘Guy With a Camera’ (2018, USA, 12 minutes). Guy Hircefield, a veteran who served in the Israeli military at the start of its occupation of Palestine in the 1980s, now fights again Israeli occupation, ethnic cleansing and environmental warfare. His only weapon is a camera.

This is followed by director Molly Stuart's 'Objector'.

In six months 19-year-old Atalya must either accept her mandatory Israeli army assignment or face prison. She questions the practices of her country's military and becomes determined to challenge this rite of passage. The film follows her to prison and beyond, offering a unique window into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the perspective of a young woman who seeks truth and takes a stand for justice.

A USA production, 2019, 75 minutes, E (exempt from rating).

The Canterbury Film Society meets every Monday night (with breaks for public holidays) at 7.30pm (plus some additional screenings, like this festival) at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. We have membership prices to suit every pocket, eg a Flexi-Pass costs $30 for three films, may be shared amongst friends and has no expiry date. New members are warmly welcome and are asked to come early to speak to our membership team. (Downloading a membership form from our website and filling it in before you come is helpful.) Doors open at half-an-hour before the screening time for socialising and for sales of food ($2) and drink ($2–$5). Please assist us by bringing in no outside food or drink. Thank you :)
