Havelock Theatre breaks new ground with a rehearsed reading of Gerard Sibleyras’ Heroes translated by Tom Stoppard. This adaptation was the winner of London's prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, and is described as playful, bawdy, and heartbreakingly funny.
The play takes place in the expansive Convent gardens for Retired Military Men, August 1959 in a home somewhere in France. Set outside on a terrace in the garden of the convent hospital where Philippe, Henri and Gustave are hatching a plan to escape When one is agoraphobic, a second lame and the last prone to collapse as a result of shrapnel in his head, failure is sad but inevitable.
War heroes, all – They’ve had enough of the tortures of their confinement: dictatorial captors, untrustworthy fellow prisoners, and far too many birthday parties. Indeed, life in a retired soldiers' home is almost unbearable! So, while keeping each other company on the back patio, they hatch a plan to escape to Indochina, or at least to a picnic under the poplars on a nearby hill.
