Textile artist Lynne Frith has always loved the sea. John Masefield’s poem “Sea Fever”, learned by countless school children of her generation, captures some of those feelings though she is not a sailor or even a very good swimmer.

In her childhood, Lynne had wonderful family holidays at the beach. They were times of learning, of fun and freedom, whether they were fishing from the wharf, fossicking in rockpools, collecting shells and stones, paddling in the shallows, and cooking sausages on a fire on the beach. She learned to be respectful of both sea and shore and to appreciate its changing moods.

Now Lynne lives near enough to the coast to hear the ever changing sounds of the sea, to walk along the foreshore, and to breathe in the sea air.

The pieces in this exhibition draw on those childhood memories. They are worked with scraps of fabric, threads, beads and found objects, and are the result of a playful approach to a range of techniques.

Lynne’s work can be viewed in the CAN foyer for the month of July, with many pieces available for sale.
